The chaos that was witnessed on the news yesterday following the attack in Las Vegas left us all shocked and on our knees in tears and prayer. With at least 58 dead and over 500 in hospitals, this crisis has been said to be the deadliest mass shooting in modern American history. Our prayers and sympathies are with all of the families of those lost during this time, and with all of those in recovery. I cannot imagine what grief must be in Las Vegas today.
Without a doubt, our world is in chaos. Wars, natural disasters, division and strife fuel the sense of chaos. If you go on any media source at any time of the day, our minds are filled with reports of chaos from all corners of the world.
The most chaotic place out of any country however, never gets any media coverage. That place is in our own mouths. This turbulent hotspot is in need of a powerful and profound move of God.
Did you know that we have the authority to bless or to curse with the same tongue? As you face the chaotic commotion of each day, remember that you have a choice to use the tool of your tongue to either supernaturally transform us or terrorize. It is yours to choose.
Spirit-empowered believers are people of blessing. We believe in the God of miracles because we believe nothing is impossible with God. We believe the Holy Spirit has the power to establish and release order in a world of darkness, dysfunction and disorder. We believe in the power of praying in the Holy Spirit. We believe you can change your present atmosphere with the power of your words.
Our words have the ability to leave a prophetic impact for God on generations globally. The power of our words cannot be articulated simply by our own comprehension. The Bible describes our tongue as a sword that has the power to bring life or death.
Three areas that are impacted by the words of our tongues are our personal lives, the people around us, and the direction of our world.
The first area affects us personally. Whether you recognize it or not, the words you speak impact your life. Just as a wheel steers a car or a paddle a boat, your tongue steers the direction of your entire life.
When you speak the truth of God's Word, grounding yourself in His love and agreeing with His promises they come to pass in your life. The same is true of speaking negatively, however. If you are always cynical and skeptical unloading negativity, your life will never be what God intended it to become.
Some well-meaning Christians have negated the idea of positive confession due to abuses and excesses. Yet, after more than 40 years of ministry, I can honestly say that I have never seen a negative person prosper in ministry, and usually their personal lives are a mess as well.
Second, the words you speak impact the lives of those around you. Just as Proverbs 12:18 teaches, our words have the power to either destroy someone or to heal them. Ephesians 4:29 warns us to let no corrupting talk come out of our mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear. Our words are meant to bless others. Our mouths are appointed by God to encourage and edify.
Finally, the words you speak impact the future of our nations. It sounds almost too good to be true, right? Yet, 1 Timothy 2:1-4 urges us to pray for our leaders. Why? Simply because when we pray, God goes into action. Whether you love or hate our current administration, your words indicate your attitude towards your nation. Your attitude, in turn, affects your prayers, and ultimately, prayer determines to what extent God can work in a country.
It is our duty as followers of Christ to pray for our nations and the government structures over them. We are to declare Christ's authority and purpose with our prayers.
Could America be at great turning point if the people of God would stop being polarized by our words? What if we sought God's face as intently as we bash one another's political agenda on Facebook? This isn't the time either to gloat or to criticize.
At this time of grief in our country, this is not the time to be placing blame and hate—but instead to use our words to comfort those in need. This is the time to intercede for heaven's rule and reign.
The words we speak are seeds planted into the spiritual realm for our future. The words we speak and the prayers we petition to God outline the direction of our future. Is your future bright or bleak? Examine the words coming out of your mouth.
Realize the power of your words in your life, the lives of others and in your nation.
